DUBAI: The Dubai Mall is recognising International Women’s Day with a three-week celebration shaped to inspire and empower women by celebrating their successes and contributions.
The festivities under the ‘International Women’s Month at The Dubai Mall’, launched today with a motivational Women’s Talk with Sass Brown, Dean of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) and global advocate of sustainable fashion. Sass shared her insights on the evolution of women within the design industry as well as gender balances she overcame to reach her success today.
As part of this campaign, The Dubai Mall has partnered with DIDI to award a full four-year scholarship to a promising female student for the Fall 2018 intake. The Dubai Mall Scholarship has been created to empower women in design and innovation, allowing one aspiring young talent to change the face of design in the region. The four-year scholarship is open to female students enrolled at DIDI, with the recipient to be announced this June.
The first of its kind in the region, DIDI is a not-for-profit profit design school that offers a unique design education in the form of a four-year Bachelor of Design Degree (BDes). The curriculum has been crafted in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Parsons School of Design, and offers a unique programme that is firmly embedded in design-thinking and creative problem solving. DIDI will give students the opportunity to design their own degree by choosing a unique cross disciplinary education from a choice of four concentrations: Product Design, Strategic Design Management, Multimedia Design and Fashion Design. DIDI will enroll its first class of students in Fall 2018.
The Dubai Mall’s Women’s Talks will continue throughout the month, featuring inspiring females including Helen Uzaizi, CEO of BizWorld UAE and a renowned speaker and advocate of social entrepreneurship; Nayla Al Khaja, the UAE’s first female Director who will discuss her challenges as a pioneering female filmmaker; and Dr. Reem El Mutwalli, a cultural educator and published scholar.
Each Women’s Talk will take place at The Dubai Mall, in a public café setting where women from the community can also join in on the relevant discussions of juggling work-life balance, gender balance and inclusion.
Throughout the campaign, visitors to The Dubai Mall will be able to discover some of the region’s most inspiring women, with ‘Pillars of Success’, a retrospective of some of the Arab Women Awards’ winners over the last decade. The larger than life exhibit, which will be live from March 13th-31st, will adorn the mall’s pillars, profiling 90 Arab woman from the region who have individually made a significant contribution to progressing the role of females in society. This is joined by a photo exhibit on display near the Grand Atrium, which will profile a series of influential Arab women from around the world with an interactive social media wall, engaging mall visitors to share their most inspiring person, or moment.
The Souk Atrium will be a hub for art, with female artists working together to create a dynamic, collaborative space. At its centrepiece will be a live calligraphy art showcase, featuring Narjes Noureddine, an accomplished Arabic calligraphy artist whose works have been displayed internationally.
A live art installation will take place from March 22nd-31st from 4:00pm to 10:00pm daily, alongside live poetry, music and spoken word performances, all from local artists.
The Dubai Mall will also be inviting female visitors to share empowering messages to the wider community, with ‘Weigh This’, a meaningful activation which encourages women to change perceptions
of themselves. Rather than focusing on the numbers on a scale, the activation invites women to express how they define themselves in terms of achievements and values. In addition, there will be a “Leave a Message, Take a Message” wall, inviting guests to hand-write inspirational messages and pay forward their wishes to other guests. Both activations will be located near Galeries Lafayette.
Celebrating Mother’s Day, The Dubai Mall will be hosting complimentary make-overs for hardworking mums from March 15th-24th, with hair and make-up touch ups courtesy of Paris Gallery.
