ICCBS launches tree plantation drive

KARACHI: International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) on Monday launched a tree plantation drive at ICCBS campus.

During the drive, as many as 1000 saplings will be planted in the premises of the international center to take part in the federal government’s initiative to enhance the green cover of the country. Names of trees, planted in the drive, include Monkey puzzle, Neem, Royal Poinciana, Guava, Malabar plum, bilberry, and Moringa.

Director ICCBS Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary planted a sapling in the garden of Virology Research Center to launch “Tree Plantation Drive” at the ICCBS. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shaiq Ali, Prof. Dr. Khalid M Khan, and other officials and students were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Iqbal Choudhary said that the plantation drive was essential for us to counter the threats of climate change and pollution confronting the nation’s future.

He pointed out that every citizen was required to play his role in the tree plantation drive so that the country could be saved from environmental and land degradation. He said that during the whole campaign more than 1000 saplings will be planted. He said that hundreds of plants of fruits had been provided by the federal government for the drive.      

Prof. Iqbal Choudhary urged the citizens to realize the significance of plantation, and focus upon building Pakistan as a green country.

He said that the boiling temperature in the metropolis could be reduced by planting trees following the international concept of urban forestry.

He said that the degradation of forest have become a real threat to the ecosystem of Pakistan. He pointed out that deforestation and forest degradation impact the lives of millions of people whose livelihoods depend on forests. News Desk
