Asma Abdulaziz and Omaima Yousif wins 2020 IP Olympiad

DUBAI: In light of the announcement by the Foreign Trade Relations Department of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism in the Kingdom of Bahrain that the Intellectual Property Training Center for the GCC and the National Institute for Standards and Industrial Property of the Republic of Tunisia invited specialists and those interested in the Intellectual Property Olympiad competition under the slogan “Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property”, on Thursday, December 3, 2020, the National Institute for Standardization and Industrial Property of the Republic of Tunisia held a virtual honoring ceremony on the Microsoft Teams platform, honoring and celebrating the two Bahraini fashion designers Asma Abdulaziz Al-Najdi and Omaima Yousif Al-Sayed;  After acknowledging the winning of their participation in the competition, as each of them decided from the outset to utilize their abilities and skillful potentials to present their best, derived from their distinguished artistic taste, thought and creativity and uniqueness in presenting the ideal industrial model, until it was recently announced that they won the prize for the Intellectual Property Olympiad for the year 2019 / 2020.

Dr. Riad Al-Sousi, Director General of the National Institute for Standardization and Industrial Property, praised the material and moral support provided by the World Intellectual Property Organization, which reflects positively on the youth, and congratulated the winners of the competition, in a speech delivered in the presence of Dr. Walid Abdel Nasser, Director of the Regional Office for Arab Countries in the World Organization  For intellectual property, Dr. El-Tayeb El-Hadary, a university professor and former minister, a member of the National Arbitration Committee for the Intellectual Property Olympiad, Mr. Khalifa El-Melli, Director General of Quality and Evaluation at the Tunisian Ministry of Education, and a number of prominent figures in the Tunisian Republic.

The Bahraini designer Asma Al Najdi, a graduate of the Bahrain Fashion Incubator, presented her winning participation, showing it through an audio video that expresses her interest in everything that would support the ideas that contribute to the advancement of society in a fair and purposeful environment, expressing at the same time her appreciation for the intellectual property offered by  Protecting from the misuse of innovations and establishing a balance between the interests of innovators and the public, and encouraging them to innovate, showing her innovation in designing a dress that carries a solar charger, in which the phone is charged as soon as it is placed in the dress pocket, and the designer Al Najdi aims, through her innovation, to maintain a sustainable environment.  This charging is a clean source of carbon emissions and an alternative to electrical energy.

Omaima Yousif Al-Sayed

On the other hand, fashion designer and businesswoman Omaima Al-Sayed owner of Odesign fashion brand presented her winning innovative idea, which was also well received and appreciated by the judge committee.  By designing an electronic application that can be downloaded on the mobile phone,which gives accurate readings of physical measurements by taking a personal picture and translating it in Arabic and English, as well as comparing it with the international size chart, with the aim of facilitating the online shopping process and eliminating the need of fitting apparels, which limits the transmission of diseases and infection.

The designers Al-Najdi and Al-Sayed praised the support of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism for the efforts and initiatives encouraging Bahraini youth, urging innovators in various fields to participate in the competition, and its great concern in paving the way for Bahraini innovators.

It is worth mentioning that the IP Olympiad competition is a national initiative launched by the National Institute for Standards and Industrial Property and supported by the World Intellectual Property Organization and several national bodies, including the Ministries of Education, Cultural Affairs, Higher Education, Scientific Research, Youth and Sports. The competition is also the first annual event of its kind at the national level about elements of intellectual property.
