Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi’s Fine Arts Committee organized a ceremony to pay tribute to the renowned painter Mashkoor Raza at Haseena Moin Hall. The event was graced by prominent figures, including the President Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi Muhammad Ahmed Shah, Chairman Fine Arts Committee Farrukh Shahab, Mansoor Alam, Majyd Aziz, Shireen Maqsood, Tauqeer Ahmed Muhajir, the well-known artist Shahid Rassam, Mehtab Ali, Salman Alvi, Ghalib Baqar, Shehnaz Ahad, Nadeem-ul-Hassan, A.S. Rind, and Zulfiqar Ali Shah, along with other notable personalities from the art world.
During the event, Muhammad Ahmed Shah congratulated Mashkoor Raza on receiving the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz, highlighting his long-standing relationship with the Arts Council. He remarked on the legacy of Raza’s work, mentioning that one of Raza’s paintings from 40 years ago is still displayed at the Arts Council. Shah praised Raza’s versatility, noting that his work extends far beyond the equestrian themes he is famous for. He emphasized the challenges artists faced in the past, particularly in the absence of financial rewards, and lauded Raza for his dedication to both his art and his family’s well-being.
Shahid Rassam commended the Arts Council for initiating this practice of honoring artists during their lifetime, recognizing the immense contribution of Mashkoor Raza to the art world. Mansoor Alam said that Before this, we have not seen such programs being held for living individuals; this happens only at the Arts Council—it is a tradition of the Arts Council. Mashkoor Raza’s work is not hidden from anyone. There are very few artists in Pakistan whose work has been appreciated as much.
Mashkoor Raza has given equal importance to both quality and quantity in his work. Along with textile designing, he has incorporated painting into his life.” Prominent businessman Majyd Aziz shared his admiration for Raza’s work, stating that his home is adorned exclusively with Raza’s paintings. Shireen Maqsood said, “Wherever we go, Mashkoor Bhai is always present, whether it’s a school, a hospital, or any other place. He has worked tirelessly day and night.”
Tauqeer Ahmed Muhajir added, “Seeing Mashkoor Raza’s work inspired me to become an artist. His work is found not only in Pakistan but also in Indian homes. It is truly delightful that the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, is celebrating Mashkoor Raza’s work.” Zulfiqar Ali Shah remarked, “Mashkoor Raza has taught us the art of understanding colors. He knows how to translate colors into paintings. Ahmed Shah has done significant work in promoting art and culture.”
Shehnaz Ahad shared, “I have seen Mashkoor create paintings with deep colors, where the white color distinctly stands out. His painting style changes every four to five years. When it comes to painting horses, he has created everything from tiny dots resembling horses to large, impressive ones.”
Nadeem-ul-Hassan said, “His bold strokes force the paintings to speak.” Ghalib Baqar mentioned, “Mashkoor and I studied at the same school; no one in Pakistan has painted more than Mashkoor.” The event concluded Chairman Fine Arts Committee Farrukh Shahab thanking everyone, while President Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi Muhammad Ahmed Shah presented a shield and flowers to Mashkoor Raza on behalf of the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi.
