Breast Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women globally, impacting 40,000 deaths in Pakistan annually. As October nears, countless campaigns commence to bring to light the disease impacting 1 out of 9 Pakistani Women. To highlight the significance of early detection, and to advocate for the importance of self-care, The Crafter’s Guild and Smile Sunshine hosted The Pink Affair. The event was hosted in honor of the women belonging to the local craft community under social responsibility efforts.
The afternoon commenced with remarks and understanding from Dr. Saira Bano on alternative medicine and impact of early detection, followed by an interactive session by Dr. Zubaida Qazi, president of Pink Pakistan. The session engaged and encouraged questions by women in audience regarding early detection, myths regarding breast cancer, and what triggers growth or potential cancer risks. The discussion was a sign of concern from individuals who now find it important to take time out and address their health.
Ridwana Mohamed, founder Food for your Face spoke upon the holistic approach and lifestyle for one’s being. The emphasis was taking better care of oneself to be able to nurture and do more for others, if one must. The afternoon then topped with a very personal and sentimental journey of Dr. Sobia Ali, whose mother underwent cancer diagnosis and treatment much recently.
The event was well received with countless members from the local community who contributed to its success. This included brands the likes of Pure Desi, Irma Herbals, Isholicious, Cup n Cakes, Saffron and Spice, and Khushi in a Box.
Organizations must take initiatives in advocating for health and wellness. Awareness and understanding of such life threatening diseases can assist with early detection and aid with rehabilitation before cancer can progress. As per research, despite the pandemic, less stage 3 and 4 diagnosis have been documented, stage 1 cases are more common for cancer. This implies that awareness and advocacy is now impacting and reaching the masses for prevention. The Pink Pakistan application also assists with detection techniques, on call support, and more, making information more accessible not just to urban users, but rural ones as well with multi lingual options.
